How many wire rope clips do I need?
Using too few wire rope clips is one of the most common causes of a slipped termination. The right number depends on rope diameter, clip type and load. This guide gives you the rule of thumb and the full table.
The Rule of Thumb
As a starting point, use at least three clips for wire rope up to 1/2", and add clips as the rope gets larger. Space the clips about six rope diameters apart, and place the first clip one saddle-width from the thimble.
How Many Clips Do I Need?
| Rope Diameter | Minimum Clips |
|---|---|
| Up to 1/2" | 3 |
| 5/8" to 3/4" | 4 |
| 7/8" to 1" | 5 |
| 1-1/8" to 1-1/4" | 6 |
Why Spacing Matters
Clips that are too close together cannot develop full grip, and clips that are too far apart leave the rope unsupported between them. Even spacing lets each clip share the load.
After Installation
Apply a light load, then re-tighten the nuts to the recommended torque. Check the clips regularly for slippage and re-tighten as needed.
FAQ
How many wire rope clips do I need for a 1/2" rope?
At least three clips, spaced about six rope diameters apart.
Do more clips always make it stronger?
Up to a point, yes, but correct spacing and torque matter as much as the count. Follow the manufacturer's recommendation.
