How do you install wire rope clips correctly?
Wire rope clips are only as strong as their installation. A clip that is the wrong size, spaced too far apart or tightened in the wrong order can slip under load. This guide shows the correct way to install wire rope clips.
What You Need
A wire rope clip has three parts: a U-bolt, a saddle and two nuts. Always form the eye around a thimble to protect the rope from wear.
How Many Clips and How Far Apart
The number and spacing depend on rope diameter. As a rule of thumb, use at least three clips for ropes up to 1/2", and space them about six rope diameters apart. See our wire rope clip quantity guide for a full table.
Step-by-Step Installation
-
Form the eye around a thimble.
-
Place the first clip one saddle-width from the thimble.
-
Put the saddle on the live end of the rope and the U-bolt on the dead end.
-
Tighten the nuts evenly, alternating sides.
-
Add the remaining clips at even spacing.
-
Tighten all nuts to the recommended torque.
-
Apply a light load, then re-tighten the nuts.
Common Mistakes
-
Putting the saddle on the dead end ("never saddle a dead horse").
-
Using too few clips for the rope size.
-
Skipping the re-tightening after the first load.
FAQ
Which side does the saddle go on?
The saddle goes on the live, load-bearing end of the rope, and the U-bolt goes on the dead end.
Do I need to re-tighten wire rope clips?
Yes. After the first load, re-tighten the nuts to the recommended torque.
